CWO Giovanni Moretti
Canadian Land Forces Central Area Chief Warrant Officer
CWO (Master Gunner (Mr. Gnr)) Moretti was born in Montreal, Quebec. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1977. Upon completion of his Basic Artillery Training, he was posted to the 2nd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Petawawa, Ontario where he served until 1983.
For the next two years, CWO (Mr Gnr) Moretti was posted to the 5e Régiment d’Artillerie légère du Canada. In 1985, he was posted to the Field Artillery School to attend the year long Assistant Instructor in Gunnery (AIG) Course. He remained at the school as an AIG and upon promotion to the rank of Master Warrant Officer in December 1987, he was posted to the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) as the Drill Sergeant-Major. In July 1990, he was conferred an Honorary degree from RMC’s Class of 1990.
CWO (Mr. Gnr) Moretti was then posted back to 5e Régiment d’Artillerie légère du Canada to assume regimental duties. He had the privilege to attend the Master Gunner Course No 27 in 1994. Upon graduation, he was posted to Land Forces Headquarters in St-Hubert, Quebec.
In July 1996, CWO (Mr. Gnr) Moretti was posted back to the 2nd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery as the Master Gunner and BSM D Bty. In July 1998, he was selected to attend the year long Sergeant-Major Course at the United States Army Sergeant Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. He successfully graduated the course and was a faculty member at the Academy for the next two years.
In July 2001, CWO (Mr. Gnr) Moretti was posted to Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) as a faculty member at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Military Science. He assisted in the development of the curriculum for the Army Technical Warrant Officer Programme and instructed the Officers Technical Staff Course.
In June 2003, CWO (Mr. Gnr) Moretti was given the honour and privilege of being appointed as the Regimental Sergeant-Major of the 2nd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. He deployed to Afghanistan with Operation ATHENA Roto 0 as the Operation Officer of the Liaison & Negotiations Organization of the Kabul Multi-National Brigade, as well as secondary duties as RSM to the Canadian Brigade Troops.
On 30 June 2005, CWO (Mr. Gnr) Moretti was appointed Brigade Sergeant-Major of 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Petawawa, Ontario. Upon completion of his tenure as Brigade Sergeant-Major, in June 2007, he went on to assume the duties of Divisional Command Sergeant-Major for Regional Command South, International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, deploying from January to October 2008.
Following his return to Canada from Afghanistan, CWO (Mr Gnr) Moretti was appointed as the Joint Task Force (Central) CWO and Land Forces Central Area Sergeant-Major in Toronto, Ontario.
CWO (Mr. Gnr) Moretti’s military decorations include the Order of Military Merit (MMM), Meritorious Service Cross (M.S.C.), Canadian Forces' Decoration (CD), Netherlands Decoration of Merit (NLD-MB), and the United States Meritorious Service Medal (USMSM).
CWO (Mr. Gnr) Moretti is married to Carole Quenneville and have three sons together.
