Traditional Land Navigation Returns to the Basic Leader Course

On August 26-27, the Fort Bliss, Texas Noncommissioned Officer Academy (NCOA) conducted map reading training in a classroom environment that concluded with a hands-on practical night and day land navigation course at training site, Forward Operating Base Freedom. Since the Basic Leader Course (BLC) reintroduced land navigation back into the program of instruction (POI), BLC class 009-24 was the first to complete the traditional course without the use of electronic Global Positioning System (GPS) devices.

Soldiers Fight Veteran Homelessness By Participating In 5K

On Saturday August 3, staff from the Fort Bliss Noncommissioned Officer Academy (NCOA) participated in the 11th Annual Home Run for the Homeless 5K in downtown El Paso, Texas. The event hosted 931 participants, and the funds raised will go to help the Veterans Transitional Living Center, a local program under the Opportunity Center for the Homeless, a non-profit organization.

Physical Training Competition Builds Morale Among Junior Leaders

Seven platoons and one cadre team from the Basic Leader Course (BLC) Class 008-24 competed for the coveted Iron Platoon Shield on July 29. During the 22-day course each student is challenged to immerse themselves in the five domains of Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) to optimize Soldier readiness.

Class 75 International Students Tackle Challenges

Every year a group of students attending the Sergeant Major Academy (SGM-A) make an especially long trip from their home countries scattered across the globe to attend the SGM-A located at Fort Bliss, Texas. This group of International Military Students (IMS) come from many nations and for some it is their first time traveling to the United States. This situation can lead to unforeseen issues that the students have to resolve.

Commandants Meet to Improve NCO Training

Commandants from various NCO Academies (NCOAs) met at the NCO Leadership Center of Excellence (NCOLCoE) on Fort Bliss, Texas, to take part in the Commandant’s Training Council (CTC). The three-day-long event began on July ninth and was hosted by the NCOLCoE Commandant, Command Sgt. Maj. Tammy Everette.

SMC Class 74 appoints graduates to Sergeant Major

In the days leading up to the Sergeants Major Academy (SGM-A) class 74 graduation ceremony, another series of ceremonies took place on the campus. Five appointment ceremonies were held, one for each resident department in the academy. During this series of promotions over 360 of the classes 500 students, were appointed to sergeant major. Most of those promoted were active-duty Army or Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Soldiers.

The Army Celebrates its 249th Birthday

Hundreds of Servicemembers and Army Civilian Professionals gathered at the Noncommissioned Officer Leadership Center of Excellence (NCOLCoE) and Sergeants Major Academy (SGM-A) campus to continue the time-honored tradition of singing the Army song and enjoying cake afterwords.
