Warrant Officer Class One Clive Douglas

Sergeant Major of the New Zealand Army

Warrant Officer Class One Clive Douglas assumed the appointment of the Sergeant Major of the New Zealand Army on March 31, 2017.

Born in Rotorua, New Zealand in September 1966, Douglas received his secondary education at Nelson College, Nelson, New Zealand. He enlisted into the New Zealand Army as a rifleman in 1985. Upon completion of basic training he was assigned to 2nd/1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.

WO1 Douglas has served in various units including the 2nd/1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Battalion in Burnham Military Camp; the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment in Singapore and the Linton Military Camp, New Zealand; the Army Depot; the New Zealand Army General Staff Headquarters, and the Officer Cadet School, New Zealand.

WO1 Douglas has served in numerous leadership appointments including the New Zealand Warrant Officer Instructor at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Australia; Senior Instructor Noncommissioned Officer School, The Army Depot; Training Warrant Officer, Officer Cadet School; Regimental Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment; Command Sergeant Major, 1 (NZ) Brigade, and Land Command Sergeant Major at Headquarters, Joint Forces New Zealand.

His operational deployments includes, Infantry Section Commander in Somalia as part of United Nations Operation in Somalia II; Mortar Fire Controller and Operations NCO in Bosnia, Operation Radian III serving with United Nations Protection Force; Support Company command sergeant major in Timor-Leste with NZBATT VI as part of United Nations Mission Support in East Timor; and Training Warrant Officer Force Training Team, Multi National Force and Observers of Operation FARAD Sinai.

WO1 Douglas’ awards and decorations include the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with clasp, and the Chief of Army’s Commendation. He holds National Diplomas in Adult Education and Training, and Business. He qualified on the Grade III Staff and Tactics Course in 2008 and is a graduate of the New Zealand Command and Staff College, Joint Warrant Officer Advance Course and United States Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 63.

WO1 Douglas and his partner AJ have two adult sons, Lance and Cyprian, and their focus is supporting their family and providing them the best opportunities for their future. WO1 Douglas enjoys reading, swimming, cycling, half Ironman and has a spectator interest in most sports.
